A Whole New Mind: Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age
For a fascinating read about the evolution of our economy, values and society at large, check out Daniel H. Pink’s A Whole New Mind.
Whether you agree or disagree with Pink’s thesis—that the “Information Age” is being replaced by a new “Conceptual Age”—you’re sure to find this an interesting read.
Pink notes that the Information Age has valued the “knowledge worker.” We’ve been focused on left-brain-style thinking, which is “narrowly reductive and deeply analytical,” as he puts it. But Pink says that what was valued in the Information Age isn’t so important in the new Conceptual Age emphasizing right-brain-style thinking.
Where the Information Age was high tech, the Conceptual Age is high concept and high touch. And where the Information Age hailed the MBA, the Conceptual Age values the MFA. Pink goes on to outline six “senses”—Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning—and says these must be honed for success in this era. And he includes strategies for developing or sharpening your “senses.”
Sound too touchy-feely? If you’re left-brain-dominant, it may seem it at first. But keep reading. Well worth the investment of your time, this book will change the way you think about your world, your work, and your worth.
